UHMW-PE (PE1000) is the workhorse polymer for any application that involves sliding, impact, abrasion, or chemical attack. Below are the 10 most common industrial applications we ship from our Dezhou factory in 2026 — each with the engineering rationale, typical specifications, a real customer case, and a direct link to the matching product page.

UHMWPE chute liner mining
01 / Mining & Quarry

Chute & Hopper Liners

The flagship application. UHMW-PE chute liners replace steel and HDPE in coal, iron ore, copper, gold, and aggregate plants. Wet sticky ore that bridges on steel slides freely on UHMWPE — preventing chute hang-ups and the safety crews who used to crawl in with sledgehammers.

Typical spec: 12–25 mm thick, bolted to steel carcass with countersunk M12 bolts at 300 mm centers. Service life: 3–5 years vs 4–6 months for HDPE. Ore types: works for everything except sharp blasted granite (use steel-backed UHMWPE).
"Australian coal washery: 12 mm UHMWPE replaced HDPE liners that were lasting 4 months. New liners ran 31 months — a 9× life extension at 3.2× material cost. Net cost-per-tonne dropped 65%."

UHMWPE marine dock fender
02 / Marine & Port

Dock Fender Facing & Marine Bumpers

Coast guards, ports, and naval bases use UHMW-PE as the contact face on rubber or steel fender backings. Vessels berth without grabbing or scuffing the hull, and the polymer survives barnacle abrasion, UV, and salt water for 15+ years with zero maintenance.

Typical spec: 30–80 mm thick UHMWPE pads, 500 × 1000 mm to 1000 × 2000 mm panels, mounted to D-rubber, cylindrical, or cone fender systems. Color: black UV-grade or yellow high-visibility. Hardness: Shore D 60–65.
"Port of Rotterdam container terminal: replaced timber facings with 50 mm UHMWPE on 240 fender stations. Maintenance budget cut 80%, no replacement needed in first 9 years."

UHMWPE food cutting board
03 / Food & Beverage

Cutting Boards, Chutes & Dairy Equipment

FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant virgin UHMWPE is the global standard for commercial cutting boards, meat-processing chutes, sugar silo liners, and dairy equipment. Its closed-cell surface resists bacterial penetration better than wood, and it does not dull knife edges like polypropylene.

Typical spec: 10–25 mm thick natural-color sheet. NSF / FDA / EU 10/2011 certified. Steam-cleanable to 90 °C. Standard sizes: 1.22 × 2.44 m sheets, custom-cut to 300 × 500 mm boards.
"Tyson Foods plant in Arkansas: 18 mm UHMWPE chute panels replaced stainless steel above the deboning line. Stuck-meat incidents dropped 90% and cleaning time fell from 45 to 15 minutes per shift."

UHMWPE conveyor chain guide
04 / Conveyors & Packaging

Chain Guides, Curve Guides & Wear Strips

Beverage bottling, canning, and packaging lines run at 300–1,200 bottles per minute on plastic conveyor chains that ride on UHMWPE wear strips. The low coefficient of friction (0.10–0.20 dry, 0.05 wet) means chains do not stick-slip, motors run cooler, and noise drops by 6–10 dB.

Typical spec: machined profiles 25 × 25 mm, 50 × 30 mm, or custom T-rails; lengths 2–6 m; tongue-and-groove ends for tool-free joining. Operating temperature: −40 to +80 °C.
"Coca-Cola HBC bottling line in Greece: switched from POM wear strips to UHMWPE. Strip life increased from 7 months to 4+ years; line stoppages for strip replacement eliminated."

synthetic ice rink panel
05 / Sports & Recreation

Synthetic Ice Rinks & Hockey Shooting Pads

Year-round skateable rinks for malls, hotels, training centers, and home backyards. Premium UHMWPE panels deliver 90–95% of the glide of real ice with zero refrigeration, zero water, zero electricity. Hockey players use UHMWPE shooting pads to practice slap shots without ice.

Typical spec: 15–20 mm thick rink panels, 500 × 1000 mm tongue-and-groove (no glue, no adhesive). Surface: dual-color or natural with UV stabilizer. Glide enhancer: spray-on polymer wax every 50–80 hours of use.
"Year-round skating attraction at Mall of Cyprus: 280 m² of 18 mm UHMWPE panels installed in 2 days. Operating cost is roughly 1/40 of a refrigerated rink and the surface is in its 6th season."

UHMWPE outrigger crane pad
06 / Construction Equipment

Crane Outrigger Pads & Excavator Track Pads

Mobile cranes, concrete pumps, and aerial work platforms use UHMW-PE outrigger pads to spread point loads on soft ground without sinking. Lightweight (1/8 the weight of steel for the same area), they are man-portable up to 800 × 800 × 80 mm and float on water — easy retrieval if dropped from a barge.

Typical spec: 50–120 mm thick, sizes 400 × 400 mm to 1500 × 1500 mm, with rope handles. Load capacity: up to 200 tonnes per pad on firm soil. Color: black, yellow, or dual-layer.
"Liebherr LTM-1500 crane fleet in Saudi Arabia: 80 mm × 1000 × 1000 mm UHMWPE pads replaced steel plates. Setup time per crane dropped 25 minutes and zero pad replacements in 3 years of desert operation."

HDPE ground protection mat 4x8
07 / Construction & Events

Ground Protection Mats & Bog Mats

Although typically made from HDPE for cost reasons, premium event-and-utility ground mats use UHMW-PE composite layers for the highest-loading scenarios — 80-tonne wind-turbine cranes, soft tundra access, oil-rig wellpads, and Formula 1 spectator footways.

Typical spec: 4 × 8 ft (1.22 × 2.44 m) panels, 12–60 mm thick, with anti-slip diamond pattern, recessed handle slots, and connecting cams. Weight: 30–95 kg per panel. Stack height: 30 mats fit in a 20-ft container.
"Vestas wind farm in Texas: 1,800 m² of UHMWPE-faced bog mats deployed across wet pasture. Allowed 700-tonne crawler crane to walk to each turbine pad with no rutting; mats reused on next 4 sites."

UHMWPE snow plow blade edge
08 / Winter Maintenance

Snow Plow Blade Edges & Cutting Edges

Municipal and airport snow plows mount UHMWPE blade edges to scrape compacted snow and ice without gouging asphalt or concrete. The polymer edge wears at roughly 1/8 the rate of steel cutting edges and produces virtually no sparks — critical for fuel-handling areas at airports.

Typical spec: 50 × 150 × 1500 mm bars, drilled for direct bolt-on replacement of steel cutting edges. Color: safety yellow or orange. Service: 1 winter season vs steel's 1 month in heavy ice.
"Helsinki Vantaa Airport: switched runway plows to UHMWPE cutting edges in 2022. Edge replacements per winter dropped from 14 (steel) to 2; pavement marking life extended 3×."

UHMWPE roller wheel sprocket
09 / Material Handling

Rollers, Sprockets, Pulleys & CNC Wear Parts

UHMW-PE replaces steel and bronze in low-speed, high-load rolling components — apron-feeder rollers, conveyor pulleys, drive sprockets, idler wheels, and bushings. Dimensional stability is excellent, weight is 1/8 of steel, and there is no need for grease.

Typical spec: CNC-machined from PE1000 rod stock, OD 50–600 mm, with steel hub for keyway. Tolerance: H7 ± 0.05 mm achievable. Maximum surface speed: 1.5 m/s continuous, 3 m/s intermittent.
"Ardagh Group glass plant in Germany: 32 cast-iron drive sprockets on bottle-handling lines replaced with CNC-machined UHMWPE. Lubrication labor eliminated, line noise dropped 8 dB, sprocket service life now 5+ years."

boronated UHMWPE neutron shielding
10 / Energy & Specialty

Cryogenic LNG & Boronated PE for Neutron Shielding

Two niche but high-value applications. (a) Cryogenic: UHMW-PE retains over 90% of its impact strength down to −200 °C, making it the polymer of choice for LNG terminal seal rings and Antarctic equipment skids. (b) Nuclear shielding: boronated PE (3–8% B) is the standard moderator-shield for medical proton therapy bunkers, nuclear medicine facilities, and PET-CT rooms.

Cryogenic spec: standard PE1000 grade, no special additives needed. Boronated PE spec: 4–6% boron, 25–100 mm thick panels, density 1.0 g/cm³. Test data: 50 mm of 5% boronated PE attenuates thermal neutrons by >99%.
"Mayo Clinic proton therapy center: 75 mm boronated UHMWPE panels installed inside the gantry walls — supplied per ASTM E70/E80 specs with full elemental certificate of analysis."

How to Choose the Right Grade for Your Application

Not all UHMW-PE is equal. Once you have identified your application from the 10 above, narrow down the grade using this checklist:

  • Standard PE1000 (natural white) — covers 80% of applications: cutting boards, chain guides, basic chute liners, marine fenders.
  • UV-stabilized (black) — required for outdoor >6 months: ground mats, outdoor playground, marine fenders in tropics.
  • Antistatic — required for explosive dust environments: grain silos, sugar handling, coal grinding rooms.
  • Flame retardant (FR) — required for underground mining and tunnel use, complies with MSHA / EN 14973. See UHMWPE FR sheet.
  • Oil-filled / lubricated grade — for super-low-friction sliding components (4–6× lower wear than standard).
  • Boronated — for nuclear, medical, neutron shielding applications.
From our Sales Manager Claire: "If you can describe two things to us — (1) what the part contacts (steel? rock? food? body fluid?), and (2) the operating temperature range — we can specify the right UHMW-PE grade and thickness in one email. Send us a photo of the worn-out part you are replacing and we will quote within 24 hours."
